Biography

I am Principal Investigator & Director of the UC Berkeley Center for Infectious Diseases & Emergency Readiness (CIDER) --- a CDC Center for Public Health Preparedness (CPHP) and Cal PREPARE --- a CDC Preparedness & Emergency Response Research Center (PERRC). Before CIDER, I was Deputy County Health Officer at the San Francisco Department of Public Health for 8 years. I directed communicable disease control, bioterrorism preparedness, and community health epidemiology. At CIDER, programmatic areas include infectious disease emergency readiness, emergency management sciences, epidemiology preparedness and informatics, and emergency preparedness and response research (through Cal PREPARE). I teach courses in infectious disease epidemiology and control, outbreak investigations, public health emergency preparedness and response, and applied epidemiology using R. I am developer and maintainer of 'epitools'---an R package for epidemiologic computing and graphics. My formal training is in medicine (Harvard), primary care internal medicine residency (UCSF), clinical infectious diseases (UCSF), and epidemiology (DrPH, UC Berkeley). Hobbies

Youth Soccer Coach

I coach a Division 3 (developmental) boys soccer team --- Las Mantarrayas (stingrays). Our goal is to optimize player development in a fun and supportive environment.

We play year-round in San Francisco youth soccer leagues:

  • San Francisco Vikings Soccer League (SFVL), Upper House (fall)
  • Jose Coronado Memorial Futsal League, (JCFL) (winter)
  • San Francisco Vikings Soccer League (SFVL), Upper House (spring)
  • SF Rec & Park 7-a-Side Soccer League (SFRP) (summer)

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

I currently train at 10th Planet Jiu-jitsu San Francisco (Denny Prokopos). My kids train in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (gi and no-gi) and Muay Thai kickboxing at FT Combat Club (Darren Uyenoyama).
